Who Is Isabel May?
Isabel May is an American actress best known for playing Elsa Dutton in the Paramount+ western drama 1883. She first became a familiar face to younger audiences as Katie Cooper in the Netflix comedy series Alexa & Katie. Since then, she has built a career that mixes streaming success with serious dramatic work, earning praise for her natural talent and emotional range. She has also lent her voice as the narrator of 1923, tying her performance in 1883 directly into the larger Yellowstone universe.
Early Life and Family Background
Isabel May grew up in Santa Monica, California, where she showed an early interest in performing. Her sixth-grade English teacher reportedly noticed her talent for storytelling and encouraged her parents to support her creative side. By age 11, she was already auditioning for acting roles.
To make room for her growing career, Isabel switched to online schooling around the eighth or ninth grade. She continued her education this way through high school, finishing in 2017, which gave her the flexibility to attend auditions and take on bigger projects.
Isabel keeps details about her parents and family life mostly private. What is known is that her family supported her acting ambitions from very early on, even helping her attend auditions at different studios.
Isabel May’s Career
Career Beginnings
Isabel May’s acting journey started with small auditions in her early teens. Despite having minimal formal training, her natural charisma and comedic timing quickly stood out to casting directors. This led to her first major break: the role of Katie Cooper in Netflix’s Alexa & Katie (2018–2020), a series that introduced her to a wide young audience.
Rise to Prominence
While building her profile through Alexa & Katie, Isabel also took on the recurring role of Veronica Duncan in Young Sheldon. This role showed a different side of her acting range and proved she could handle both comedy and more grounded drama, setting her up for bigger opportunities.
Breakthrough Role: 1883
Isabel May’s biggest career moment came with 1883 (2021–2022), the Paramount+ prequel to Yellowstone. She played Elsa Dutton, a young pioneer woman navigating hardship on the American frontier. Critics praised her performance for its emotional depth and authenticity, and the role introduced her to a much larger, more mature audience than her earlier work.
Her connection to the character didn’t end with 1883. Isabel also serves as the narrator of 1923, continuing Elsa Dutton’s voice-over presence and tying the two shows together for fans of the franchise.
Recent and Upcoming Projects
Isabel May has continued expanding her filmography beyond the Yellowstone universe. She appeared in Run Hide Fight (2020) and The Moon & Back (2022), and she has more recently been linked to projects including Scream 7 and Love Language. She was also seen briefly in Apple TV+’s Masters of the Air (2024), playing a supporting role opposite Austin Butler.
Isabel May Net Worth
Net worth estimates for Isabel May vary quite a bit depending on the source, ranging from around $400,000 up to $3 million. This gap likely comes from different sites’ assumptions about her earnings from streaming deals, endorsements, and long-running roles like 1883 and 1923.
| Estimated Income Source | Approximate Contribution |
|---|---|
| Acting Career (TV & Film) | $2 – 2.5 million |
| Endorsements & Media | $0.3 – 0.5 million |
| Combined Estimate | $400K – $3 million |
Because Isabel hasn’t publicly confirmed exact figures, it’s best to treat these as rough estimates rather than confirmed facts. Her steady work across multiple hit shows suggests her earnings have likely grown since her early Netflix days.
How Old Is Isabel May?
Isabel May was born on November 21, 2000, which makes her 25 years old as of 2026. She was born under the sign of Scorpio and belongs to the Millennial generation.
Isabel May’s Physical Appearance
Isabel May stands at 5’9″ (175 cm), a height that has helped her stand out in period drama roles requiring a strong physical screen presence, like her work in 1883. She has a naturally athletic build suited to her outdoor, western-set roles, along with dark hair and a classic, understated style both on and off the red carpet.
Unlike many young actresses, Isabel doesn’t lean heavily into high-fashion branding or frequent style overhauls. She tends to favor simple, natural looks that match her low-key public persona, which fans often note as refreshing compared to more image-focused celebrities.
Isabel May Boyfriend: Is She Dating Anyone?
Isabel May is famously private about her love life, which has fueled plenty of speculation over the years. For a long time, she was rumored to be dating her Alexa & Katie co-star Barrett Carnahan, though that theory was debunked once Carnahan got married in 2020.
2026 update: During an interview with Sneak Peek TV at SXSW 2026, Isabel confirmed that she currently has a partner, though she did not share the person’s identity. Around the same time, she was seen filming Scream 7 alongside actor Sam Rechner, which sparked fan speculation about a possible real-life connection — but nothing has been confirmed by Isabel herself.
As of now:
- Isabel May is not married.
- She has confirmed having a partner as of 2026, without revealing who it is.
- Any specific boyfriend names circulating online remain unconfirmed rumors, not verified facts.
Isabel has always kept her romantic life separate from her public image, which is part of why she’s built a reputation as a career-focused actress rather than a tabloid regular.
Isabel May on Social Media
Isabel May maintains a modest but active presence on social media, primarily using Instagram to share updates related to her projects, behind-the-scenes moments, and occasional personal posts. She is noticeably more reserved online than many of her peers, rarely posting about her personal or romantic life directly.
Because her follower counts and exact handles can shift over time, it’s worth checking her verified profiles directly on Instagram for the most current numbers rather than relying on older, potentially outdated figures found on fan sites.
Awards and Recognition
While Isabel May has not yet won a major industry award, her performance in 1883 earned widespread praise from both critics and audiences. Many entertainment outlets have named her one of Hollywood’s most promising young actresses, largely on the strength of that single breakout role.
Why Isabel May Matters
Isabel May represents a newer generation of actresses who built their careers through streaming platforms rather than traditional studio pipelines. Her jump from a Netflix comedy to a critically respected western drama shows real range, and her choice to stay private about her personal life sets her apart in an industry that often rewards oversharing. As she takes on more leading roles, she’s positioned to remain a significant name in both television and film.
